Curtiss-Wright Steam & Air Solutions Facility
Frampton Construction was selected to build a highly-customized manufacturing facility for Curtiss-Wright, a product designer, manufacturer and service provider for the U.S. Navy. The project, developed by The Keith Corporation, is located within the Charleston Trade Center in Summerville, SC.
The 144,376-square foot building houses Curtiss-Wright’s Steam & Air Solutions (SAS) business unit and supports the design, manufacture, test, and shipment of Navy steam turbines and steam valves, nuclear steam turbines, aftermarket steam parts, upgrades, and overhauls. The facility was constructed of pre-cast concrete panels and structural steel with several heavy industrial manufacturing equipment foundations, a 20-foot deep steam testing pit, and a high-pressure boiler & steam generation system.
In total, 12 specialty equipment foundations were included in the final design, with the largest of those being the foundation for a Waldrich-Coburg machine. This machine foundation required over 146 tons of rebar and over 3,000 cubic yards of concrete to fill out it’s massive 100’ x 50’ x 16’ size. The ceilings have a 40-foot clearance height, tall enough to house multiple overhead bridge crane assemblies and other specialty equipment. Manufacturing operations comprise 100,000 square-feet of the building. Open office areas, conference rooms, and a cafeteria occupy the remaining 34,000 square feet.
